Does minimum wage apply to trainee hairdressers in the UK?

my hairdresser trained a young girl for 3 years. in that time he paid her 拢80 per week for full time hours.

after training finished %26amp; she had turned 18yrs old...her wage only went up to 拢90 for full time work. he told her minimum wage does not apply to hairdressers.

this just doesn't sound right or legal to me...but i could be wrong. if anybody knows about this...i would appreciate any serious answers. thank you.

unsure of category!Does minimum wage apply to trainee hairdressers in the UK?
Too many businesses are explioting our youth and paying ';buttons'; when they are legally required to pay out minimum wage. The poor hard working teenagers are being fobbed off and becoming disheartened by this illegal system. I would check with the Citizens Advice Centre for the proper legal stuff. No wonder our young folk say it's better for them to be unemployed with all the benefits that go along with it. If they were recognised and paid the correct wage, I'm sure they would continue to work and have a wee bit of ambition.Does minimum wage apply to trainee hairdressers in the UK?
Minimum wage does apply to hairdressers, its legal and its law especially if she is now classed as qualified and especially if she is earning him money.

Many hairdressers abuse the law by getting round it by saying that the individual is still training and under apprenticeships but a proper appenticeship in hairdressing lasts three years (and are quite rare) with qualificational papers at the end of it, or two years at a college for C%26amp;G, the hairdresser should then be registered with the hairdressers federation.

ACAS will help you but another organisation called the Low Pay Comission are specialists in this field and can be rung on 020 7467 7207.
nice hat

'; Apprentices

From pay reference periods starting on or after 1 October 2006 the special rules for apprentices will be extended to apprentices aged over 25. This will mean that:

Apprentices under age 19 will not qualify for the national minimum wage

Apprentices over age 19 and in the first 12 months of their apprenticeship will not qualify for the national minimum wage.';

Nothing about hairdressers, but she my be an ';Apprentice';
I can categorically tell you that at the age of eighteen any employer, with a bona fide tax registered company, must legally ensure that their employees enjoy the basic minimum wage.

However, some industry sectors, such as restaurants and clubs, pay a reduced hourly minimum rate on the assumption that tips and other remunerations will boost their pay well over the minimum rate. The hairdressing business is probably one of them, too.

Such an agreement is outside the statuary act covering minimum wages - by virtue of being jointly and mutually consented.
If they are over 16 and being employed then yes minimum wage is a legal requirement.

The girl was ripped off and should see some like the Citizen's Advice Bureau for advice about what they should do next.

That hairdresser is either very misinformed or a downright liar who breaks the law!
Yes it does, as long as they qualify. Is she still an apprentice? If not then the boss is telling lies. You need to contact ACAS or CAB as soon as possible.

He is lying. It does apply to hairdressers.
